In most cases, homeowners never check their sump pump for proper operation. Unfortunately, it's discovered that a sump pump is not operating when the demand for water removal becomes necessary.

Sump pumps perform a variety of tasks. These include removing ground water during rain storms or heavy winter thaws. They also provide protection against a flooded basement due to a ruptured plumbing pipe or water heater. They are installed in a pit and are float activated. Sump pump failure can happen for various reasons. A ceased or faulty impeller, burned out motor, or faulty float assembly.

Maintaining your sump pump is important as it must perform properly when the need arises.
  • Test your sump pump by adding water to the pit with buckets or a garden hose and allow the pump to come on and cycle a few times. Make sure the pump operates flawlessly every time.

  • Check for debris in the bottom of the pit and remove any debris that can clog the screen intake or get into the impeller area of the pump.

  • Check for an oily film on the water surface. This can indicate a failure of the oil seal for the motor and will cause the pump motor to burn out.

  • Be sure the float is not obstructed and has free movement in the pit area.
